BCM215 Beta

My BCM215 project explores the concept of photography modes in video games, specifically in relation to Skate 3 and Steep. I have chosen this as I am passionate about the sports relating to these games, I enjoy photography and I love the games.

I am lucky enough to work in the media team for a ski resort, with my job to work as a model/athlete have photos taken of me snowboarding. This is coincidentally the exact aim of the photo mode in steep. Which brings me to this video essay, comparing photography of action sports in simulation games and reality.

To beta this project I have been sharing content on Reddit in r/Steep, r/Skate3 and r/Snowboarding.

I received lots of positing feedback from these subreddits and plenty of evidence that other users use the game to simulate real life activities, as well as practice in-game photography.

The prototyped content I shared into the subreddits was a comparison of a real life image of myself snowboarding, and a screenshot of the game where I am mimicking the trick. This was so successful that it inspired other users to do the same, as shown in this post.

The format for my video essay will be:

  1. Introduction
  2. Explanation of who I am
  3. Explanation of photography modes
  4. The content I have produced and reddits reaction
  5. Recommended improvements for photography modes
  6. Conclusion

I look forwards to the final product!

  1. Hi Asher, I think you have created such an amazing concept, I really love that you have used photos from your real-life snowboarding and made comparison using photo mode in Steep. Very engaging and pretty awesome too!

I think its incredible how the notion of ‘photo modes’ have almost redefined our conventions of photography itself. Even the conventions surrounding the camera, have drastically changed following the inclusion in video games. I found an article on google scholar, very interesting read, that outlines the development of photography in a video game setting, and expresses the remediation of photography in technical and cultural terms, in paritularily focusing on its inclusion in popular video games. Here is the link:

Great choice in posting your content to Reddit, I think this is an awesome platform for you to directly communicate with audiences.

Looking forward to seeing your finished DA!
